STS BEGINNING BAND
Beginning Band is open to all STS students in grades 3-8 (no previous musical experience required). Students may pick from the following beginning band instrument choices: flute clarinet, alto saxophone (limited number), trumpet, trombone, percussion (limited number). Students are allowed to begin on the following instruments, but private lessons are required for these instruments (oboe, french horn, tuba, euphonium, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet).
Beginning Band Schedule
Mondays-Woodwind Players (Flutes, Clarinets, Saxophones) 4:00-4:45pm
Wednesdays- Brass and Percussion Players (Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion)4:00-4:45pm
Thursdays-All Beginning Band Members 4:00-4:45pm
Students are required to rent their band instruments, purchase Standard of Excellence Book 1 for the appropriate instrument, and practice minimum 100 minutes per week. We perform two concerts per year (Christmas and Open House). This is a fun and exciting class offered at STS. Learn a skill that will stay with you for a lifetime! Be sure to take advantage of our after school private lesson program for your beginning band child!
What do I need?
Flutes: Good working Flute, Standard of Excellence Book 1, Two clothes (handkerchiefs are fine). One for the polishing the outside of the instrument and one for drying out the inside of the instrument. Pencil
Clarinets/Saxophones:Good working clarinet or saxophone, A box of reeds(make sure you buy for the appropriate instrument: either clarinet or alto saxophone. We will start with Rico strength 2.5. As your child develops, we will recommend more advanced reeds and strengths. Students should have 4 good, working reeds in their case at all times. Chipped and cracked reeds do not play and should be thrown away. Standard of Excellence Book 1. Pencil

Trombones: Good Working Instrument, small spray bottle, slide cream (NOT OIL), Standard of Excellence Book One, Pencil
Percussion: Percussion Practice Kit (bells and drum pad), pair of mallets, pair of drum sticks, Standard of Excellence Book One for Drums and Mallets, Pencil
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING THIS YEAR?
Christmas Concert. Typically we play small tunes that we have learned out of our band book for the Christmas Concert.
We also perform on Open House in the Spring and Perform two concerts (one in December/one in spring) for the student body.
WHAT IS EXPECTED OF AN STS BEGINNING BAND STUDENT?
1. Respectful of directors and classmates
2. Follow Directions
3. Be Quiet and Attentive
4. Give 100 percent effort
5. Practice 100 minutes per week (this is 20 minutes per night/5 days per week)
6. Attend all performances
7. Students do receive a E,S,P, or N grade
8. Arrive on Time
9. Parent/Student signed contract
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR OUR STS BEGINNING BAND STUDENTS

2. Smart Music. For approximately 45.00 a year, your child can have an online tutorial experience with their band book and almost every piece of band music that we perform. This program makes practicing much more productive as the student can get instant feedback on their performance.
